Near Achnasheen
Wester Ross
Scotland
Betten 5/6
A former keeper's cottage set on the 11,500 acre Glencarron Estate, Glencarron stands in the glen of the same name on the edge of the famous Torridon range in Wester Ross, with views of the mountains which are truly breathtaking. It stands high above the road from Achnasheen to Strathcarron; away further down, a railway also runs through the glen, where three whole trains a day (!) ply between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh.
The area is a walker's paradise, with superb routes starting straight from the door and more Munros in the vicinity than you can shake a stick at! (Four on the Estate itself and 8 more within ten miles.)
The semi-detached cottage has been carefully restored and refurbished to make a charming and comfortable holiday hideaway, a perfect place to return to after a busy day Munro-bagging. Both the sitting room with open fire (fuel
included) and the newly fitted dining kitchen are bright and attractive and the bedrooms with their coombed ceilings and dormer windows are also newly furnished. There is a grassed garden all round the cottage and a small stand of trees to the rear.
Apart from walking, there is fishing for trout on two lochs the estate and the chance of a salmon and sea trout on a 3km. section of the River Carron. Stalking can also be arranged in season on the Estate. There is a golf course at Lochcarron (12m).
This really is the heart of the Highlands. The nearest shops are at Lochcarron (12m) where there is also a hotel serving bar meals. The stunningly beautiful village of Plockton (23m), well-known since it featured in the television series Hamish Macbeth, also has shops and good places to eat. Kyle of Lochalsh (shops, hotels) and the Skye Bridge is 29 miles away, as is Eilean Donan Castle, famous from a thousand calendars, not to mention the BBC's big balloon sequence! Gairloch (hotel, restaurants) with its sandy beach is 38 miles and just beyond there are the famous gardens at Poolewe. Those seeking bright lights and nightlife will find little closer than Inverness, which can nevertheless be reached in an hour by road - or you could flag down one of these trains!
