Lighthouse View
Scarinish
Isle of Tiree

Betten 5

Lighthouse View is a 'spotty' house - one look at the picture will tell you why - a type which is characteristic of Tiree and where only the mortar is painted white. It dates from 1870 and stands just yards from the shore and harbour in the little village Scarinish (butcher, Co-op, bank, pub, PO) on the east coast of the island.

Inside, it offers cosy, comfortable and traditional accommodation on two floors. It is heated by electricity; the sitting room has an open fire and enjoys sea and harbour views. Outside, there is an enclosed grass garden on the edge of the machair, where the sheep wander free (supervision required therefore with dogs).

Tiree has some lovely sandy beaches and, believe it or not, one of best sunshine records in Britain. The reasons for coming here are the peace and tranquillity, good, undemanding walking, and the above-mentioned beaches. It is also a mecca for surfers, and there is a centre offering beginners courses at Loch Bhasapoll on the north-west coast of the island. Bird lovers will also enjoy sightings of the lapwings, wheatears, redshanks, and greylag geese which the island hosts in abundance. Because it is quite a flat island, it is also excellent for cycling. There is a golf course about 3 miles from the cottage.

Those with an interest in history will wish to visit Vaul Bay, where you can see the remains of a first century dry stone broch, hidden in the rocks. A couple of miles to the west along the coast brings you to the Ringing Stone, a large glacial boulder which gives a metallic sound when struck and which is adorned with prehistoric markings. Legend has it that if the stone is broken, Tiree will slide into the sea. The Skerryvore Lighthouse at the south end of the island houses a museum and is also well worth a visit.

To get here, you can take the Calmac car ferry in to Gott Bay from Oban or fly direct from Glasgow Monday-Saturday.

Bed linen, towels, a starter pack of fuel for the fire and electricity are included!included. Two well behaved large dogs or three small dogs are welcome by arrangement, but must be kept under control.
