On a peaceful country estate in the gently rolling Ayrshire countryside of south west Scotland is Martnaham Bothy, a traditional, detached, stone cottage which overlooks Martnaham Loch, one of the foremost private bird sanctuaries in the region, and thus a perfect paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers. This comfortable and well equipped holiday home faces south, so catches all the sun that is going. The wonderful views of the loch can be enjoyed from most of the rooms. The sitting room has a large bay window with window seat, an open fire and there is also a separate study with an additional television. Outside, there are 30 acres of open garden to be enjoyed, and, beside the cottage, there is a sun-trap patio area (furniture). Parents of young children should be advised that the loch is just a few yards from the front of the cottage and is not fenced off.

Martnaham Loch Martnaham has the enormous advantage of being just 20 minutes from Prestwick airport, and as a base for exploration, it gives the best of both worlds: the Ayrshire coast with its sandy beaches and, of course, the famous golf courses at Prestwick (8m), Turnberry (16m) and Troon (12m), is just a few miles to the west, while inland, of course, you are in the heart of Burns Country. His birthplace at Alloway is just 3 miles away

The pretty market town of Ayr (6m, all facilities), immortalised in Burns' Tam o'Shanter, has a theatre, cinema, swimming pool and excellent shops and restaurants. From Ardrossan (25m), you can take a trip across to the beautiful island of Arran. Troon is also the port for the Seacat which, in summer, operates a daily service from BelfaSt Historic Culzean Castle, in its stunning clifftop setting and surrounded by its country park, is 16 miles away and well worth a visit. Five miles south of Turnberry is Girvan (all facilities), from where you can also take boat trips out to the island of Ailsa Craig, the 'Fairy Rock' (it actually looks more like a dumpling!) which rears out of the sea about 10 miles offshore. It is now a privately owned bird sanctuary and home to thousands of gannets.

While there are no mountain peaks to challenge the climber, there are a number of excellent walks in the area. There is an equestrian centre 2 miles from the cottage, and fishing can be arranged at the other end of Martnaham Loch (1m). Nearby Coylton (2m) has a shop, pub, tennis and squash courts. Further afield, you are within an hour's drive of South Ayrshire and the lovely Galloway Hills. And if you hanker for some heavy retail therapy, it is only 50 minutes by train from Ayr to Glasgow City Centre. (Art lovers will also be interested to learn that The Burrell Collection is 45 minutes away by car.)

Heating is by oil central heating (included!included) and open fire (starter pack of logs included!included, more available for purchase). Electricity is included!included. Bed linen and towels are included!included. Sorry, no pets.
