As those with a smattering of French might surmise, Beauly is a corruption of 'beau lieu' which translates as 'beautiful place'. The village, however, was so called by no less a person than Mary Queen of Scots herself, when she visited in 1564 and exclaimed 'Quel beau lieu!' Unsurprisingly, the name stuck, and Beauly today is a no less charming village, lying as it does at the head of the Beauly Firth, and just 10 miles from Inverness. Scotland is quite narrow here, and while one is close to the East Coast, the West Coast too is only one hour's drive away.

Priory Court Apartment

In the broad and peaceful main street of the village is Priory Court, a luxury ground floor apartment in a traditional stone-built house. In every room, great attention has been given to the quality of the furnishings. The bedroom has a comfortable double bed with ample hanging and storage space, the sitting room has TV and VCR, and the kitchen is very well-equipped.

This is a very suitable location for those looking for peace and quiet without being too remote. In the village itself, where pipe bands play in the main square in summer, are the remains of the 14th century Priory. To the south are quiet roads which are particularly suitable for cycling. Some of the loveliest glens in Scotland, Glen Affric, Glen Cannich and Glen Strathfarrar, surrounded by no less than 20 Munros, lie to the west and south. There, the lower slopes are covered by the remnants of the ancient Caledonian Forest and there is an abundance of wild life such as pine martens, wildcats, otters, red squirrels, crested tits and crossbills, as well as buzzards, kites, peregrines or even golden eagles. The rivers are full of fish, and permits for trout and salmon fishing in the Beauly itself are available, while the Firth is a well-known wintering place for Whooper swans.

Another excellent way to see the countryside is on horseback, and there is a pony-trekking centre at Kiltarlity (5m). There is a fine and highly scenic golf course at Aigas in Strathglass while there are another 19 courses (including the championship courses at Dornoch and Nairn) within an hour of Beauly. There are shops, a hotel and pubs in the village.

Heating is by electricity. Bed linen and towels are included!included. Sorry, no pets.
